Porcelain Veneers Q&A

What are Veneers?

Veneers cover the surface of teeth, strengthening them and providing a more aesthetically pleasing smile and are designed to strengthen teeth and cover the front surfaces. Veneers are commonly made of porcelain or composite materials. They are tinted like a natural tooth and match the surrounding teeth. Porcelain veneers are most often used because they are very durable while still providing a natural look. Veneers are installed to cover gaps, pits and stains. They can hide chips and cracks and are frequently used to regulate the appearance of teeth.

What happens during the veneer process?

Veneers are usually installed in two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and then prepared by removing a thin layer of the tooth enamel to make room for the veneer. This allows the veneer to lie flush with the original tooth. Casts are made of the teeth and gums to be covered with veneers and sent to a lab where the veneers will be fabricated to fit the patient’s mouth exactly. A temporary veneer will be installed while the permanent covering is made. At the second visit, a strong bonding agent will be used to attach the veneer. The dentist will make sure the veneer fits properly and will buff and polish the installation to make sure it shines like a natural tooth.

What are the pros and cons of porcelain veneers?

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option because they are strong, look natural and can last for a long time with correct care. They can improve the appearance of the teeth and can dramatically change a person’s smile.  Veneers can be tinted to match the patient’s natural teeth, but are resistant to stains and are very durable. Veneers can be costly and may cause increased sensitivity. Veneers are also irreversible because they require that the patient’s natural enamel be removed from the treated teeth. The dentist will discuss all of the pros and cons and answer questions to make sure that the best solution to meet the patient’s expectations is implemented.
